1794 S-18b R4 Head of 1793, Edge Device of 1794 PCGS Genuine, VG Details, Environmental Damage. Lightly corroded, strongest on the reverse where the roughness obscures many of the devices. No verdigris or notable contact marks. The portrait displays the details of a piece grading closer to Fine, and the date is weak but readable. Dark olive brown and steel with hints of green patina suggesting this piece was lost in soil for a while. Our grade is VG8 sharpness net AG3. The "Head or 1793" feature is noted on the PCGS label.

Lot 243
1794 S-19b R4 Head of 1793 with Edge Device of 1794 G6. Very slightly sharper, especially on the reverse, but there are some old, light scratches hidden in the toning inside the wreath. Otherwise the planchet is smooth and displays only a few trivial marks, including a thin planchet lamination from the rim through the L in LIBERTY to the top of the cap where it fades away. Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel mixed with some lighter brown toning, mostly on the obverse. LDS, Breen state II, with obvious swelling in the field under the cap. The bottom edge of the date is starting to wear into the rim and a few letters of the legends are weak, but the eye appeal of this cent is nice for the grade (especially for a Head of 1793).

1794 S-38 R5 F12. Sharpness VF20 but there are a dozen small pits on the obverse, none distracting but too many to ignore. The notable ones are in the field off the tip of the nose. No verdigris and the notable contact marks are a fine vertical scratch on the neck, a nick on the top of the I in LIBERTY, and a pinprick on the E in STATES. Glossy light olive brown mixed with reddish chocolate. EDS, Breen state II. The two chips in the field under the cap are strong and the reverse is rotated 10 degrees CCW. 1794 S-43 R2. NGC graded VF-25. Glossy medium chocolate brown and darker olive with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. No corrosion or verdigris, but there is a small planchet chip in the field before the eye. There are several old, light scratches on both sides, and the only one of those that is visible to the unaided eye is a diagonal scratch through the N in UNITED. The only other notable mark is a rim bruise right of the Y in LIBERTY. MDS, Breen state IV early. The die crack through the U is bold and the reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW. The reverse is slightly misaligned to K-4 causing strike weakness at ERICA but everything else is strong. Our grade is F12+ sharpness net VG10. 1794 S-47 R4 VF25. Sharper by at least 5 points with smooth, very attractive surfaces, but there are a few light contact marks. The notable ones are a light rim bruise under the lowest curl, some tiny ticks in the field before the portrait, and a collection of faint pin scratches in the hair left of the earlobe. In addition there is a very shallow low spot at the dentil tips off the tip of the lowest curl and a similar low spot at the dentil tips above the I in LIBERTY, most likely a result of some debris on the die. The reverse is essentially flawless. Choice glossy light chocolate brown with excellent eye appeal. LDS, Breen state III, with all the fine die cracks on the reverse described by Breen. In addition there is a double profile on the forehead, nose, and lips of Ms Liberty plus similar doubling on LI in LIBERTY and the 179 in the date. Breen says the doubling at LI is from repunching in the die but he does not mention the similar doubling seen elsewhere on this cent. The reverse is not rotated as often seen on this variety. Certainly a high condition census example of this tough variety. The finest is an EF45 example impounded in the ANS, and the next best grades VF30. A great opportunity for a serious collector of 1794 cents.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.

1794 S-49 R2. NGC graded VF-30. Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel blending to dark chocolate in protected areas. A glass reveals extremely fine roughness in protected areas, strongest at ED-ST, but overall this cent has excellent eye appeal. The only mark is a diagonal nick in the field under the tip of the chin. M-LDS, Breen state II late. A very strong die crack extends from the rim down through the E in LIBERTY into the hair below. 1794 S-57 R1 VG10+. Five points sharper but there are several light contact marks around the rims on both sides, and the rims have been carefully smoothed to minimize their impact. The smoothing was skillfully done and it takes a glass to detect the work. The only rim marks remaining visible are a rim nick over the E in STATES, a rim bruise at S-O, and a few small nicks on the rim under the fraction. The surfaces are smooth and the toning is a nice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are covered with fine roughness but no verdigris, and the only mark is a pit in the field close below the chin. The date is nearly worn smooth showing only parts of a few numerals, and no more than half of the legends remain easily readable. What makes this cent special is the rotated dies. The reverse is rotated 70 degrees CW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. While lesser rotations are known for this variety, none of those is more than 45 degrees.
